Reconnecting the Missing – Prevention, Recovery, and Hope for Every Child
21 May 2025
As we approach International Missing Children’s Day on May 25, the message is clear: Let’s not just remember the missing—let’s bring them home.
This day honors missing children across the world, celebrates successful reunifications, and strengthens global resolve to protect children from going missing in the first place.
Online Safety and the Silent Threat
In today’s digital world, more children are going missing after interacting with strangers online. Social media, messaging apps, and online games can expose children to grooming, false identities, and dangerous lures.
Parents and caregivers must:
- Set clear rules for internet use
- Talk openly with children about online risks
- Monitor online activity regularly
- Encourage reporting of strange messages or interactions
Online safety begins at home. Stay involved. Stay informed.
Found Children Deserve Protection and Dignity
When a missing child is located, the journey is not over. Many have endured trauma and need medical attention, psychological support, and protection. The goal is safe reintegration with family, when possible.
If you find or suspect a child has been found:
- Report immediately to the police or Children’s Officer
- Avoid sharing unconfirmed photos or identities online
- Cooperate with tracing and reintegration efforts
Every found child deserves to be treated with dignity and care—because recovery is not just physical, but emotional and social too.
Be a Watchful, Present Adult
Children rely on adults to notice when something isn’t right. Sometimes, all it takes to prevent a disappearance is one engaged caregiver or teacher who notices:
- Unusual friendships
- Emotional withdrawal
- Changes in behavior or mood
- Expressions of wanting to leave home
Build trust, listen, and be present. Your attention is the greatest form of protection a child can have.
A Message to Every Child
To any child reading this:
If you’re feeling scared, unsafe, or alone—speak up.
There are adults who care and want to help. Whether it’s a parent, a teacher, a Children’s Officer, or someone on the 116 Child Helpline—you are not alone. Your voice matters. Your safety matters.
Why We Mark May 25 – International Missing Children’s Day
We observe this day to:
- Remember children who remain missing
- Share success stories of reunification
- Create awareness on prevention and reporting
- Encourage communities to stay vigilant and involved
This year, let our message be one of hope and commitment:
Together, let’s find and reunite. Because every child matters. Every child counts.
