Planning Beyond Today: Strengthening CCIs Through Succession
3 February 2026
Succession planning was the main agenda during the recent Mombasa LTC monthly meeting, focusing on the importance of leadership continuity within Child Care Institutions (CCIs).
Members shared their understanding of succession, drawing from personal experience. The discussion was guided by reflective questions on the need for a successor, planning for the future in a director’s absence, and the qualities of effective leadership.
It was agreed that leadership is not permanent and that unexpected circumstances such as illness or retirement can arise. Without a clear succession plan, CCIs risk confusion and instability. Members emphasized that CCIs should operate through strong systems and governance structures, including active boards and documented succession plans.
Key qualities of a successor identified included transparency, maturity, commitment to the director’s vision, and a child-centered approach that safeguards children’s rights.
The session highlighted the importance of intentional planning to ensure sustainability and continuity in serving children.
