Empowering Through Organic Animal Husbandry: Practical Training at CSHEP Ndeiya

8 April 2025

At Lift the Children, we believe in sustainable solutions that empower homes to thrive long after we leave. This April, we took a practical step in that direction by organizing a dynamic hands-on training session in organic animal husbandry at CSHEP Ndeiya, an established organic agriculture and livestock demonstration center located in Limuru.

The training brought together representatives from all children’s homes supported by Lift the Children that are currently running or are interested in starting animal farming projects. The focus? Simple, sustainable livestock management—starting with Chicken and rabbits.

Practical Skills, Real Impact

The session was fully interactive. Participants learned cleaning and feeding animals, and observing how proper housing, hygiene, and nutrition impact animal health. The training emphasized organic methods such as using aloe vera and pepper as natural remedies to prevent infections—practices that are cost-effective and accessible for any home.

A Spark of Inspiration

The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many left feeling equipped and energized to implement what they learned:

“Mimi I have already bought chickens 🐔! Please if they fall sick, remind me of the remedy—but for now, it’s still fresh in my mind: peppers and aloe vera twice a week, just dip it in their drinking water. And to avoid infection, cleanliness is the first priority. I really enjoyed the session—more blessings to the LTC team!”

“Yesterday’s meeting was very impactiful… ready for little animals and small animals. Thanks so much for the knowledge!”

Farming for the Future

By supporting homes with these practical trainings, Lift the Children is investing in long-term food security, youth skills development, and income-generating opportunities. As youth and staff engage in meaningful farming practices, they not only contribute to the well-being of their homes but also gain valuable life skills they can carry into adulthood.

We extend our deepest gratitude to CSHEP Ndeiya for their hospitality and commitment to community empowerment.

This is just the beginning. Each month, we’ll continue to share how the homes we support are growing stronger, more independent, and more hopeful—one initiative at a time. For more information about CSHEP you can visit their website https://cshepkenya.org/
