Celebrating 15 Years of Lift the Children: A Journey of Impact and Gratitude
28 August 2024
This month, Lift the Children (LTC) marked a significant milestone—our 15th anniversary. The celebration took place at a special location, the Gathaithi OVC Centre in Githunguri, Kiambu County, which holds a deep significance for us. It was at Gathaithi that we began our journey 15 years ago, launching our first-ever project focused on permaculture. The permaculture project aimed to create a sustainable source of food for the children at the center. Today, the fruits of that labor are still evident as the children actively engage in farming vegetables and fruits, significantly reducing the cost of purchasing food. This project has not only provided nourishment but also taught the children valuable skills in agriculture and sustainability.
Our anniversary celebration was a vibrant and heartwarming event. All LTC staff in Kenya came together, alongside the founders and directors of the various children’s centers we support. We were also joined by some of the incredible children who are beneficiaries of our programs. Representatives traveled from as far as Mombasa and Nairobi to be a part of this memorable day.
The atmosphere was filled with gratitude and joy. The founders and directors expressed their heartfelt thanks to Lift the Children, sharing how our unwavering support has made a tangible difference in their work. Many of them spoke about how rare it is to receive consistent appreciation and backing for the vital work they do in their communities. It was a moment to recognize their dedication and the impact they’ve had on the lives of countless children.
One of the highlights of the day was the children’s presentations. They prepared speeches and performances to show their appreciation for Lift the Children. A particularly touching moment was when one young girl, now pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Human Resource Management, shared her story. After struggling to find school fees for over two years, she was finally able to join university this year thanks to the support from the Fountain of Hope in Kabuku, Limuru, which became part of the LTC family last year.
Another memorable moment came from a talented child at Kibera Pride Children’s Home, who presented a beautifully drawn portrait of John Volken, founder of Lift the Children, as a token of appreciation. This gesture was a testament to the deep connection and gratitude these children feel towards LTC.
The day was filled with dancing, singing, and the joy of being together. We ended the celebration by cutting a cake, symbolizing the sweet success of our journey over the past 15 years. As we look back on our journey, we are filled with pride and gratitude. Lift the Children has touched many lives, lifted many souls, and made a lasting impact on the communities we serve. Here’s to the next 15 years of making a difference, one child at a time.
