Celebrating 15 Years of Impact: Lift the Children’s Journey

3 April 2024

Fifteen years ago, a powerful vision was born amidst human ambition and kindness. It was nurtured by one man’s unwavering determination and belief in the power of compassion and community. Today, as we honor the remarkable journey of Lift the Children since its start in 2009, we explore the profound impact it has had on vulnerable children worldwide.

Leading this extraordinary journey is John Volken, the Founder and Chair of the Board. His resilient spirit and philanthropic values lay the foundation of Lift the Children’s mission. John’s story began with humble roots, armed only with $80 and a lot of enthusiasm. He built United Furniture Warehouse into a North American retail giant, with over 150 locations and annual sales exceeding $200 million.

In 2004, John’s life took a pivotal turn. He sold his business and used the proceeds to establish a foundation dedicated to addressing societal needs. From this commitment emerged Lift the Children and the John Volken Academy, both aiming to empower vulnerable individuals to reach their full potential.

At the heart of Lift the Children’s mission is a dedication to supporting vulnerable children and integrating them into caring family and community structures. The organization strives for a world where every child is supported, inspired, and empowered to lead healthy, happy, and safe lives.

Lift the Children is deeply committed to upholding the UN Charter of the Rights of a Child. They ensure that every child receives essential support, including nutrition, education, and emotional well-being. From providing balanced meals to healthcare and emotional support, Lift the Children prioritizes the holistic well-being of each child.

Transparency and accountability are fundamental to Lift the Children’s operations. The organization operates transparently, following international guidelines and fostering open dialogue with stakeholders. Through collaborative partnerships, Lift the Children maximizes its impact and advances its mission with determination.

A key aspect of Lift the Children’s commitment is that 100% of sponsorship donations directly benefit the children. Generous support from the John Volken Foundation and the board ensures that every dollar reaches the children’s centers, covering essential expenses without reducing impact.

Currently, Lift the Children provides $14 per child per month for food, education, shelter, and clothing. Additionally, the organization conducts monthly capacity-building sessions, including group, regional, and one-on-one trainings with homes facilitated by its dedicated Kenyan staff. For homes beyond Kenya’s borders, these sessions are delivered through online platforms.

The focus areas of these trainings span from case management for children and families to the transition of children’s institutions to community-based care, underpinned by best practices, legal guidelines, management strategies, self-sustainability endeavors, and family strengthening initiatives. Technical support services are also extended to address any emerging issues within the homes, with ongoing monitoring and evaluation conducted by Lift the Children’s Kenyan team, overseen by Mary Kamau, Current Country Coordinator in Africa, ensuring prudent fund utilization.

As we celebrate 15 years of Lift the Children’s remarkable journey, we invite you to join us in honoring the countless lives transformed through its efforts. In the coming weeks, we will share stories that illustrate the profound impact of Lift the Children. Together, let us continue to uplift vulnerable children and create a future filled with hope and possibilities for generations to come.
